Family Support for Infant Grief and Loss
The Maya A. Johnson Foundation is a 501c3 created to honor the legacy of sweet baby Maya. She lost her battle with bacterial meningitis on January 16, 2015 at only six months old. This was a tragic loss for the Johnson family. However, they were determined to continue her legacy of joy and happiness. Through the foundation, the Johnson family is able to assist other children and as well as, families that have been affected by the loss of a loved one. There are several resources available to families.
First, the foundation offers peer support groups as well as certified mental health professionals for grieving children. Second, the foundation uses journals/workbooks to offer guidance on how to assist children in coping with grief in a healthy manner. Above all, getting the mental health support we need to manage through the loss of a loved one is most important.
Mrs. Johnson’s book “Beautiful Baby Butterfly” was written for her son Miles as well as children ages 2 to 9 years old that have experienced the loss of a sibling. The book is beautifully illustrated and walks through the life of a butterfly family that loses a child. Similarly, the goal for the butterfly parents is to provide their child tools to manage the process of grieving. They want him to feel comfortable about expressing his feelings. In conclusion, the book is a great tool for families, hospitals, schools and local support groups.
